Me Do!

"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."   Romans 5:8

For years, one of my greatest anticipations and aspirations was to be a grandma. Now that I get to fulfill this role, I can't describe the joy that comes from watching your child be a parent... especially while you get to enjoy the benefits of unconditional love from this tiny person.

We are very blessed that our Emilia lives locally, and Spring Break provided additional time for "Nana" and Emilia to hang out together. Even though I have spent a majority of my life in the educational realm, I am just fascinated watching her progress through the age appropriate developmental stages. After spending time with her last week, it is very apparent that she is entering into the "independence" milestone... more affectionately known as the "Me Do" stage.

The first signs appeared when we were going for a walk, and I told her to get her shoes. Immediately, she attempted to put them on herself. Her wise parents bought her the easy Velcro style shoe, but the tongue of the shoe had been bent backwards, thus blocking the entry of her foot into the shoe. I asked her if I could help her, and she immediately responded, "Me Do." Intensely, she continued to attempt to force her foot inside the shoe without success. As her frustration escalated, she ended up throwing the shoe. I picked it up and pulled the tongue out and encouraged her to try again, and this time... success!

There were additional "Me Do" moments throughout the rest of the day as we read books, played puzzles, ate meals, etc. However, at the conclusion of the day as we were getting ready for bed, she grabbed my overnight bag and tried to carry it for me, but it was too heavy. Again, I asked if I could help but quickly was instructed, "NO...Me Do." She grunted and groaned as she persistently tried to drag the bag towards the stairs. I was standing right next to her, willing and able to help her, but she was determined to follow her "Me DO" spirit. After working up a sweat without much progress, she finally agreed to my suggestion that we carry the bag up the stairs together.

As I reflected upon the day, I thought about how often I tell the Lord "Me Do!". When struggles and/or concerns come my way, I have to confess that I frequently spring into "Me Do" mode and start conquering the issue without consulting the Lord for His wisdom, guidance or assistance. Just as I was standing right next to Emilia, willing and able to assist her with her struggles, the Lord is always present and telling us "Cast your anxiety on Me because I care for you!" (1 Peter 5:7)

As we prepare to enter into Holy Week, we are reminded that God knew we could not "Me Do" our way into heaven. On our own, we are not able to pay the price for our sin. As a result, He sent us His Son to be our Savior. Through Jesus' journey to the cross, death, and resurrection, He paid the price of our sins that we could not pay on our own. And through our faith in Him, we now receive the gift of eternal life in Heaven.

Have a wonderful week knowing how much He loves and cares for you!

In His love,
Mrs. Palka
